“McCarthy,” Jason answered his cell phone sleepily. David mumbled in his sleep next to him and rolled over.
“Where are you?” Craig‘s distressed voice floated over the line.
“In bed.”
“Where?”
“In my apartment.”
“Since I‘m at your apartment I highly doubt that.”
“What?” Jason sat up in alarm and slid out of bed. He padded out of David‘s bedroom and into the hall. The clock read four a.m. “What the hell are you doing at my apartment at four a.m.?”
“I think the question is why aren’t you at your apartment at four a.m. You‘re not working.”
“I—don‘t turn this around. What‘s wrong Craig?”
“Can you come back here, or can I go there or something? Please…”
“Craig you‘re scaring me.”
“I‘m scaring myself Jase.”
“I‘m at David‘s. I‘ll give you directions.”
“Alright.”
Jason gave Craig directions to David‘s house and hung up. He went back into the bedroom and pulled on a pair of pj pants.
David shifted in his sleep. “Jason,” he mumbled reaching out. “Who was that?”
“Craig,” Jason told him sitting on the edge of the bed.
“What time is it?”
“Just after four.”
“What did he want?”
Jason sighed. “I don‘t have a clue. He was at my apartment. I told him to come here.”
“Jason.”
“Sorry just—trust me, something is wrong, very wrong. Why else would Craig drive up from Moncton and be at my apartment at four a.m.?” Jason leaned over and kissed his partner. “Go back to sleep.”

David nodded and rolled over. He fell asleep wondering just what was going on.
“I don‘t know what to do.” Craig‘s voice jolted David from his sleep. He glanced at the clock. It was just after five.
“I can‘t believe you were so stupid,” Jason hissed back.
“You‘re one to talk.”
“That is fucking different and you know it.”
“Different how?”
“I wasn‘t stupid enough to have unprotected sex with someone who I knew was positive.”
“I didn‘t know.”
“Then you shouldn‘t have been stupid enough to have unprotected sex.”
“You think I don‘t know this Jason? Fuck.”
David rubbed his face and sat up as their conversation continued.
“How many other guys have you lied to?”
“I never lied to you.”
“That‘s bullshit and you fucking know it.”
“No it‘s not, okay? Everyone else was fine, you were fine.”
“I thought you were too. When‘s the last time you were tested?”
“Before that Craig.”
“I dunno a year, year and a half.”
“How the fuck could you be so stupid? You not only put yourself at risk, you put me at risk.”
“I‘m sorry.”
“You‘re sorry! You‘re SORRY!”
“I didn‘t wake up and decide to get HIV, Jason.”

Sometimes It's Fate- Canada's Finest

Jason McCarthy is gay. He’s also a police officer living in a small-minded northern New Brunswick town where being gay could spell the end of his career. When an impending snowstorm threatens to strand his best friend and policing partner, David, Jason offers up his spare room for the night–a move that reveals Jason’s secret, and changes their friendship and lives forever.

David Richard isn’t gay–at least he doesn’t think he is. He knows he loves his best friend, and he admits to feelings that had started after a tragic accident almost a year before. When David acts on these feelings, it doesn’t go well, leaving both men alone and hurt. Jason, however, doesn’t think twice about stepping in and rescuing David’s children when their mother abandons them. The move brings David and Jason back together, but Jason’s past rears its ugly head and they both have to make difficult decisions that are sometimes best left up to fate.

Boots on the Ground- Sneak Peek!

March 12, 2012 by Angela

Thanks so swinging by! Ready for my BIG NEWS??

“Boots on the Ground” is being released by Phaze books on MAY 15th!!

So to help out with my release here is a SNEAK PEEK! At a VERY important event in the book:

Please note this SNEAK PEEK is UNEDITED at this time!

Jason kept pacing and rubbing his sweaty hand on his pants, he hadn’t been this nervous in his entire life.

“Relax Jason you’re going to be fine,” Steve said.

“I know I just,” Jason shook his head he couldn’t put his finger on what he was feeling.

“You’re happy and excited and terrified and sad and mad and glad and you have no idea all rolled into one giant ball of energy,” Steve supplied.

Jason nodded. “How did you know?”

“Dude I got married in June it’s not a feeling you forget any time soon,” Steve replied. He slugged Jason’s arm playfully. “I think you’re worse than I was.”

“You were puking your guts out in the bathroom of the rectory because you were so hung over from the night before,” Jason pointed out.

“Yeah that’s true,” Steve laughed. “Don’t tell Nancy that.”

“You’re kidding right?” Jason said. He grinned at his older brother. “You drunk called her at three am to say that you love her so you didn’t sleep with the stripper that your buddy hired.”

Steve’s eyes went wide. “I did not,” he protested, but he turned bright red anyway.

“You so did, Nancy knew you had a killer hang over. Why do you think she dragged you out of bed at eight am to do wedding stuff,” Jason laughed as Steve sputtered. “That is why I would not let you have a bachelor party for me.”

“That and only you and Craig would like the strippers that Craig wanted to hire,” Steve teased.

“That too,” Jason admitted. The conversation with Steve lasted long enough that when he stuck his head out the seats in the court room were filled. He glanced out and saw Craig making his way towards him. They had decided that neither of them was going to walk down the aisle instead they would send Mandy and Kevin up the aisle as the flower girl and ring bearer. The groomsmen would follow and they would walk in from the wings.

“Two minutes,” Craig said stepping into the anti-room. “No peaking,” he stuck his tongue out at Jason. “I already yelled at David for it.”

Jason hugged his best friend tightly. He owed a lot of his relationship with David to Craig and his pointed interventions when needed.  “Thank you,” he whispered to Craig.

“For what?”

“For being there and for kicking my ass when I needed it,” Jason replied.

Craig shook his head. “I owe you thanks, for,” he glanced at Steve. He clearly didn’t want to reveal the history between them regarding his HIV status. “Thank you for all of the support you’ve given me. I couldn’t do this without you.”

Jason hugged the smaller man. They broke apart as the music started for Mandy and Kevin to go up the aisle then Steve followed by Craig went out. He waited for his cue and then he  walk out. He caught David’s eye as they walked out of the wings together.

David looked as handsome as he ever did. His red serge seemed to shine. The whole place gave off a glow, a hum of excitement.

They met in the middle of the room. Both smiling nervously at each other. Jason reached out and grasped David’s hand tightly, neither was wearing their gloves. Instead they were safely in his pocket, David’s hand was a sweaty as his felt. That made him feel a tiny bit better.

They turned to the Justice of the Peace. She smiled and began to speak. “We are gathered here today. To join Jason and David, two people who love each other, in the union of marriage.”

Sometimes It’s Fate-the real story.

February 24, 2012 by Angela

On January 12th 2008 I woke up to a phone call that changed my life forever.

“There had been an accident, a bad one, we don’t know how many are dead, but it’s the Bathurst Highschool basketball team.”

My thoughts jumped from one to the other that morning, and I waited and prayed it wouldn’t be him. Please let him not be dead. I got the phone call around four am. By eight I knew the horrible truth.

Eight people, seven players and one teacher. Dead.

Included was someone I considered to be a little brother.

The next few days are a bit of a blur, I remember working, going to class, and feeling nothing but pain. The media filled up our small town. A place that’s been battered and torn over the years. Half boarded up, half out of luck but still home to these eight angels.

The funeral was the hardest day for me. I remember my friend coming over to my tiny apartment, she forced me to get dress and put on makeup, and go. We arrived over two hours before the funeral. Held in our 4000 seat area.  A group funeral for all Seven boys that had been killed.

There was so many people there that they had to sit in the secondary rink and watch the funeral on jumbotrons. They also broadcasted it outside of the arena to those who were gathered there.

I sat in the main arena and watched as mothers and fathers said goodbye to their sons. I watched as sisters and brothers crumpled under the weight of their grife. I watch as every single police officer and firefighter in the city bowed their heads and cried.

Outside of the area police officers from as far away as Halifax stood guard, and firefighters from as far away as Montreal watch our tiny community to make sure no more grief could come to the residents.

As the funeral finished and the last of the procession left I felt a soft brush on the back of my neck and a whisper of “I’m okay.” I knew my Boy in Red was at peace.  I later recounted that feeling to others who had been there and several people reported the same feeling. The same realization that as hard as it was for us left here on earth, our boys were in a better place.

The next few days, weeks, months, and even years have been filled with healing but never forgetting. A corner’s inquest into the crash followed finding that the 15 passenger vans the team was riding in was unsafe, and they have since been banned from use by schools across the country.

My way of healing was writing. My first story was in those dark hours I wrote aboutwhat it was to lose someone. Then I wrote about it from the POV of a family member. Then I wrote it from the perspective of a media member.

Finally my third story was “Sometimes It’s Fate” it’s about finding the meaning in the tragedy when there is nothing else. Through this novel I found my meaning in the tragedy and I just hope others have as well.

What prompted this blog post was a story in the news today. About a basketball player who “Wears number 8 for the Boys in Red”. The link to the article can be found here and it’s a lovely article about moving on after the accident.

I hope everyone can take a few moments to read the article and remember eight amazing people that let us too soon

xx

New Blurb: Daddies by Surprise!

February 8, 2012 by Angela

This book is still in it’s infancy (read less than 10k) but I’m totally in-love with it! Here is the working blurb:

Caleb McAlister’s life was as close to perfect. He was married to Luke, the most amazing man he knew, he was a successful businessman and his farm was one of the most profitable on the Island. Then a visit from Karen Tate left him doubting everything he thought he knew about Luke, and both of them holding a toddler.  They struggle to find a new balance in their lives, and just when they have it figured out Luke’s family launches a custody battle for little Stacey. As the court case ensues Caleb’s farm, his marriage to Luke, and everything he loves is put on the line in the ultimate sacrifice for love.

Look for some more snips from “Daddies by Surprise” coming soon :)!
